The Virginia Limousine Association (VLA) is looking to re-energize their membership by hosting a meeting on April 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Ruckersville, Va. All members are invited.
“We need to revitalize and regroup our association and get our important business back in front of our members,” affirmed the Board of Directors in a statement about the upcoming event.
At the meeting, there are plans to elect a new board of directors. Nominations can be submitted to VLA Secretary Glenn Stafford of Love Limousine at glenn@lovelimova.com. Attendees are encouraged to share meeting info with other members and guests.
Established in 1987, the VLA is an award-winning trade association. Their mission is to promote a stronger relationship and understanding between legal owner/operators, VA Department of Motor Vehicles, other government agencies, and the public to work toward the betterment of the chauffeured transportation industry.

On Tuesday, April 16, the Illinois Limousine & Bus Association (ILLBA) presented the latest edition of their ongoing Coffee With ILLBA webinar series. Free to operators from around the globe and held via Zoom, these late-morning sessions offer education and guest speakers on various topics facing the industry. Moderated by Executive Director Paula DeBiasi of Chicago Coachworks, this month’s topic was Let’s Go Global! Build and Maintain a Worldwide Affiliate Network.

After greeting those in attendance, DeBiasi started things off by welcoming a panel of truly global operators to sound off on the topic. Richard de Krijger of DMC Limousines (Netherlands), Myles Flood of LFL Worldwide Chauffeur Services (Ireland), and Amy Yan of AmyExpress (Asia) were all on board to discuss what it takes to develop a network, work with one another, and best serve customers.

The first topic examined dealt with marketing and what’s the most effective way to sell services worldwide. Each of the panelists discussed the importance of marketing to executive assistants, particularly with corporate work. Next, the conversation veered into the topic of service levels and what affiliates should expect from one another. While Flood cited the importance of having up-to-date software technology, De Krijger said that the best way to develop partnerships is to meet in person at tradeshows. Yan, however, recommended focusing on quality and making sure that chauffeurs are well-dressed and well-trained.

Also discussed were the various challenges faced by affiliates operating worldwide. The most notable problem debated was that of time zones and issues of pickups with flight arrivals. The panelists all urged operators and clients to concentrate on when the plane is arriving—as opposed to departure—as this can lead to confusion when crossing multiple time zones.
Finally, the group communicated the benefits of using shared software platforms and other technology. Expressing his frustration with affiliates who still send direct texts to chauffeurs demanding status updates, de Krijger pointed out that this practice can be eliminated by using GNet or similar platforms. Flood also said that Facebook groups are invaluable for developing affiliate partnerships, as you can get a good look at who’s who in various worldwide markets.

The Maryland Limousine Association (MLA) held their bimonthly membership meeting on Tuesday, April 16. Hosted at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in Baltimore, the event welcomed 25 members and guests. Representatives of the Philadelphia Regional Limousine Association (PRLA) were welcomed to the meeting, including PRLA Secretary/NLA Board Member Tracy Salinger of Unique Limousine and Ace Shaer of Ace Limousine & Airport Service.
The lunchtime meeting kicked off at noon with MLA President Len Joseph of On The Town Limousines thanking everyone for making the time to attend. Everyone was given the opportunity to introduce themselves and give a brief elevator pitch of their company or service. Joseph then introduced guest speaker Dr. Jermaine Hunter of H3 Safety Consulting, who provided an overview of the importance of CAB Reports and the SAFER System.

Produced by the Central Analysis Bureau, the CAB Report compiles data points into a database for all federally filed transportation companies. Hunter pointed out that the information contained within the report (unsafe driving, crash indicators, maintenance, clearinghouse, driver fitness, to name a few) is valuable for negotiating insurance rates. Similarly, the SAFER System (the FMCSA Safety and Fitness Electronic Records) compiles a concise electronic record of an operator’s identification, size, commodity information, and safety information. According to Hunter, this system is also used by insurance companies to underwrite and price insurance, so having a “satisfactory” rating is especially valuable.

Following Hunter’s presentation, which included a lively Q&A segment, CD Editor Rob Smentek was invited to discuss the upcoming CD/NLA Executive Retreat in Miami on June 2-5. Smentek encouraged everyone to take advantage of early registration and revealed that Forbes Travel Guide will be providing anchor content at the event. He also shared a bit about the nightlife events, including the beachfront reception dinner party at the Fontainebleau and a private yacht trip on Biscayne Bay. Smentek also raffled off CD branded prizes, including T-shirts and ear buds.

Next, Joseph shared that the MLA Board held a recent productive meeting that led to the formation of three new committees: Legislative, Fundraising, and Membership. Board members Japneet Singh of Executive CLS and Ray Gavino of Translogic Executive gave a brief update on the D.C. For Hire issues surrounding “D.C. to D.C. travel.” While, fortunately, not many members have reported problems, they advised everyone to have their decals ready and manifests accurate. Singh informed the attendees that operating permits for the upcoming Presidential Inauguration will start to be distributed in August. Additionally, Joseph mentioned that the association is in the process of revamping their website.
The meeting concluded with guest speaker Jodie Lethgo from Career Driver, who spoke about the company’s recruiting services. An alternative to sites like Indeed.com, Career Driver looks to source candidates based on strict criteria. Lethgo also pointed out that the company handles digital marketing solutions, and they are offering a discount to active MLA members for lead generation.
The next MLA meeting is scheduled for June 18 at a location to be determined.
