ABA President & CEO Peter Pantuso
Out in force! More than 1,600 operators, sponsors, and vendors attended the American Bus Association (ABA) Marketplace, which was held this past January 8-11 at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas. According to the association, the in-person networking and educational meeting was a triumphant return to live events for the industry, especially after the difficult two years motorcoach operators have faced. ABA says this was their largest event since January 2020.
“It was time for the industry to get back to business and we wanted to ensure we did that in the safest way possible,” said ABA President & CEO Peter Pantuso. “We instituted COVID protocols for all attendees with a mask mandate and requiring vaccine or negative COVID test verification to attend. The 1600+ attendees who attended were in high spirits and it was great to be able to give our members the opportunity to reconnect and kick off their business year with positive outcomes.”
On top of dozens of educational sessions, sightseeing tours, and countless networking opportunities, the event also included a bustling business floor where more than 130 buyers were taking appointments to book tours throughout 2022 and 2023.
Additionally, ABA’s councils held meetings at Marketplace, which included the African American Motorcoach Council, Bus Industry Safety Council, Bus Maintenance & Repair Council, Hispanic Motorcoach Council, School Bus Council, and Women in Buses Council.

After such a successful return to in-person meetings, ABA looks forward to the 2023 Marketplace next February 2-8 in Detroit.

Family-owned bus operator DATTCO recently shared that their driver, Clive Wallace, was recognized as Connecticut Bus Association’s (CBA’s) 2021 Motorcoach Driver of the Year.

Each year, the association recognizes one driver in the state who demonstrates safe driving with the highest standards in every facet of the profession. Wallace began his commercial driving career at White Plains Bus Co. in New York in 1998, eventually joining DATTCO as a motorcoach operator in early 2009. He has driven well over a million miles in his career, including approximately 750,000 with DATTCO.
“Clive was nominated because of his extraordinary performance standards, including unparalleled driving skills and personal conduct,” said Dennis Lyons, vice president of DATTCO’s Coach & Tour Group. “Clive has achieved many laudable attributes during his time with DATTCO.”
Lyons also noted that Wallace is among the company’s most requested drivers especially college athletic teams, including Quinnipiac men's basketball and UConn football, men's basketball, and women's hockey.
Wallace's driving record with DATTCO includes no at-fault incidents, according to Lyons, which earned him a spot in the Safety Department as a driver instructor. Wallace is one of a select group of drivers who works with new drivers during their first 1,500 miles of on-road training, and serves on the company’s driver’s committee to help communicate needs and challenges to the management team.
Founded in 1938, the CBA is an organization of transit, intrastate and interstate motor bus companies that operate vehicles in Connecticut. Its members include the major motor bus companies in the state and several affiliated vendor companies that are interested in networking with their customers.
